Good value club bar open to all

A bright, spacious local where the bar staff greet you by name and a pint of premium lager is only £2.40 doesn’t sound like your typical central London bar – but luckily for us Fitzrovians we have it right in the heart of our neighbourhood.
The bar of the 52 Club Sports & Social Club on Gower Street (mentioned by Fiona Green in our last issue) is open to non-members and offers friendly service and cheap drinks and a brand new food menu.
With a range of appetisers including potato wedges and spicy chicken wings, main courses such as Scandinavian meatballs, chicken korma and Cumberland sausages, plus desserts like the intriguingly-named Hanky Panky, diners can enjoy a three-course meal for under a tenner. “I can’t imagine there are many places in central London where you can enjoy a decent meal and some wine for just over ten pounds a head,” says Food & Beverage Manager and chef Richard Ryder.
Fruit smoothies for £2.50 (which can swiftly be converted to “Boozies” for the more adventurous), hot beverages from 75p and an (almost) endless list of cocktails round off the drinks list, all served with a smile.
As well as cheap drinks and food, the bar has a range of social activities including end of month parties, fortnightly quizzes and themed music evenings. And coming up in mid-September is the inaugural “52 Club’s Got Talent” competition. First prize is £40 plus a meal for four in the bar. Call 020 7323 9657 to register your act.
In addition to its comfortable lounges, dining tables and congenial atmosphere there is a large screen with Sky Sports (and music videos for non-sport fans), a small conservatory with pool table, and a party room available for hire. Bands, singers and comedians are also all welcome to hire the venue and have it open to the public to increase their profile and get gigs under their belts.
While the bar is already popular with members of the gym and with residents upstairs in Bonham Carter House, the fact that you do not need to be a member to visit – and to take advantage of the fantastic prices – is not yet well known. But with word of mouth quickly spreading it is sure to be a favourite meeting place for Fitzrovia residents looking for a cheap, relaxing local watering hole.
